Artists have long found Cape Cod to be a haven and source of inspiration. Artists were drawn to Provincetown starting in the early part of the 20th century. In 1899 Charles W. Hawthorne opened the Cape Cod School of Art and taught the Impressionist en plein air (outdoors) style on the beach. It was the first of several art schools established over the next few years that promoted Cape Cod as an artist’s destination.
