Kalo Maloney: A Journey from Art to Social Work and Back
Kalo started painting 50 years ago, but life often pulls us in many directions, and she is no exception. Her father was a commercial artist for the Borden Company, and as a child she watched him create signs, labels and logos. The paints were accessible and she experimented with them often.
Kalo lived in California and Alaska in the 1970’s where she became interested in studying people. She attended DuCret School of The Arts in Plainfield NJ in 1979/1980. Kalo was mainly a portrait artist at the time, while making a living as a color separation artist for the textile/wall paper industry in Cedar Grove, NJ. Eventually computers put her out of business and she went back to school and became an independent licensed clinical social worker 33 years ago. During those years she devoted her time to serving families that were involved with Child Protective Services, as well as Hospice patients and their families.
Kalo has recently retired and is finally able to spend her time and energy getting reacquainted with her passion for paint. She is inspired by the brilliant light, colors, seasons and weather conditions of the Cape, particularly the ponds at Nickerson State Park near her home. Kalo also enjoys painting portraits; she is intensely interested in both nature and human nature.
