Jody Shyllberg
plein air painting at Fort Hill

After a successful 30+ year career as an award-winning graphic designer and illustrator, I’ve returned to my first love for painting and drawing as a pastel artist.

James McNeill Whistler said, “It is not for artists to copy nature, but to make art out of nature.” I strive to create art that speaks to me and others of the beauty and diversity found in nature. My background as a designer and a life-long amateur photographer means composition and balance are important elements in my paintings. My pastels, with the exception of the birds, are done en plein air and/or from my own reference photographs and field notes. Bird pastels are done from photos for which I have received permission to use from the photographers.

I’m fortunate to live part-time on Cape Cod. The Cape’s unique light, color and vistas provide endless opportunities for inspiration and subject matter. Travel is also a passion of mine and in my pastels I work hard to portray the special qualities of the places I’ve been.

I have a BA in commercial art and continue my fine art education through classes at the Worcester Art Museum and pastel workshops. I am a current member of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod and the Cape Cod Art Association. My work has been included in national juried art exhibits.
